The Only Alternative & His Other Possibilities were a San Francisco area rock band who's earliest known gig was in August of 1966. The group consisted of Pat Hunt, Tor Olson, Tom Rice, Michael Aragon, John Bingham and folk singer Mimi Farina.
By February 1967, the band apparently had another female singer named Kay. Mimi probably left the band a little earlier than that, since she accompanied Joan on her two-month tour of Japan in January.
The group played more than a dozen dates between Aug. 1966 and Oct. 1967 in San Francisco, Berkeley and Sausalito, California, mostly as an opening act for groups such as Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Country Joe & The Fish, Sopwith Camel, Big Brother & The Holding Company and The Steve Miller Blues Band. The also played several dates as headliners. Sometime in late 1967 the group recorded eight tracks which pressed on acetate by Motown in Nov. 1967.
The songs were "Gloom And Doom," "Hot Rod Woman," "I Have Watched," "Passed Through," "See You In The Morning," "Stepping Off A Moving Plane," "Sunny Side Of The Egg." and "You Just Don't Understand." The record was never released. A short clip of he group performing at one of their headlining shows at The Matrix in March 1967. The female singer that replaced Mimi Farina was named Kay and later married bandmate Tor Olson. The Only Alternative disbanded in 1969.
